Black African Queen

Queen Amina Mohamud is best known for the expansion of the Zazzua territories under her rule as well as the creation of trade routes throughout Northern Africa. She was the first queen of the male-dominated Hausa Society. A Hausa Warrior Queen of the city-state Zazzau, located in the northwest region of Nigeria. She ruled for over 34 years. During her lifetime, given her wealth, she was courted by many suitors, but she never married or had children.

This is one of the African historical figures that can help a  young black child's imagination see beyond the stunted growth of the onesided history they are forced to learn and open up a whole new universe of possibilities that only seem to happen when the historical heroes in the books look like them. Black History is not about teaching that you're better than anybody else. It's about teaching that you are just as good as anyone else. Queen Amina for some reason fascinated me and she deserves to have her history remembered.

Not long after being appointed ruler in 1575, this Hausa Muslim Queen diverted from her father's peaceful rule and took to the battlefield. Harnessing the mighty skills of the Zazzau Calvey Queen Amina Muhamud became a fearless leader of men. She fought to her death in 1610, at the age of 77.
